Hugh S. McLellan and Deidre J. Herbert have practiced as McLellan Herbert, Barristers & Solicitors since 1992, providing high-level advice on all aspects of estate litigation, estates, Wills and adult guardianship. J. Jeffrey Locke joined them as a partner in 2020.
Hugh S. McLellan is a past chair of the Canadian Bar Association National Elder Law Section and a past chair of the CBA-BC Elder Law subsection. He is a former chair of the Canadian Bar Association Wills and Trusts (Vancouver) subsection. He has written numerous articles on estate litigation and elder law, and he is a frequent lecturer for the Professional Legal Training Program, the People’s Law School and Continuing Legal Education. In 2004, Mr. McLellan was awarded the Community Service Award by the CBA for his work with groups supporting mentally challenged citizens. He is also a member of the Estate Planning Council of Vancouver, an associate editor of the Estates & Trusts Reports and a member of NAELA (the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys). Mr. McLellan is a contributing editor of Financial & Estate Planning for the Mature Client in British Columbia and a contributor to the Annotated B.C. Representation Agreement Act, Adult Guardianship Act and related Statutes.
Deidre J. Herbert was an ad hoc Bencher for the Law Society of British Columbia (Unauthorized Practice) from 1992 until 1994 and is a former chair of the Canadian Bar Association Wills & Trusts (Vancouver) subsection. She is also a contributing author to CLE’s Estate Planning and Wealth Presentation, CLE’s Annotated Estates Practice and is a frequent lecturer for the Professional Legal Training Program, People’s Law School, Continuing Legal Education and Pacific Business & Law Institute. Ms. Herbert is a contributor to the Lexis/Nexis “Practical Guidance Toolbox”. Ms. Herbert was also a committee member of the Succession Law Reform Project British Columbia Law Institute. She is a member of the Vancouver Bar Association and the Trial Lawyers Association of BC.
Jeffrey Locke has been an adjunct professor with the University of British Columbia law school since 2011. He has also acted as a supervising lawyer for the legal research program at Thompson Rivers University law school and a supervising lawyer for the co-op program at the University of Victoria law school. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association Trial Lawyers Association of BC, and a former contributor to the Continuing Legal Education’s Annual Review of Law and Practice.
Allison Anne Curley joined McLellan Herbert in 2017 as an Articled Student after graduating from the Juris Doctor program at Thompson Rivers University. Before joining McLellan Herbert, Allison was a Legal Research Student with the British Columbia Law Institute and the Canadian Centre for Elder Law in 2017, and the Law Foundation of British Columbia in 2016. During law school, Allison volunteered as a Student Clinician with Thompson Rivers University’s Community Legal Clinic. Allison also volunteered as an Editor with the Canadian Journal on Comparative and Contemporary Law. Before attending law school, Allison obtained her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary. Allison will serve as a Member-at Large for the Canadian Bar Association’s National Elder Law Section for the 2018/2019 year.
